The North Carolina State University Alumni Association is now accepting applications for the 2019-2020 Mathews Medal. The Mathews Medal honors graduating seniors who have made significant contributions to North Carolina State University during their tenure as undergraduate students. It is modeled after NC State’s Watauga Medal, the highest non-academic award given to alumni.
The Mathews Medal is named for Walter J. Mathews, the first student enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1889. The medal recognizes seniors who have built a campus legacy based on leadership and service to their alma mater. Walter Mathews continued his involvement with the university as an active alumnus, and this award serves to encourage student leaders to envision themselves as the alumni leaders of the future.
In any given year, the award may be presented to up to four students. Applicants must be graduating seniors (May or December of the year the medal is awarded), in good standing with the University, and have completed at least four semesters at NC State. Applicants are required to submit a description of service, three essays, one letter of recommendation and this year have the option of also submitting a personal showcase. Applications should be submitted on the third floor of the Dorothy and Roy Park Alumni Center (2450 Alumni Drive on Centennial Campus) no later than 5 p.m. on February 13, 2020. Any application submitted after the 5:00pm deadline will not be considered.
