This is a list of music courses that have availability and are suitable for incoming freshman or transfers with little to no music background. Music is currently working on renumbering its courses and expect the new numbering to take effect in spring 2020 semester.
MUS 205 Introduction to Music in Western Society (class no. 11206). What is usually known as Music Appreciation (music 101) at many schools. Counts as GEP Visual/Performing Arts. Music will be changing the course numbering of this course to MUS 105 beginning in Spring 20.
MUS 320 Music of the Twentieth Century (Class No. 3761). This course does not require any prior music knowledge and is an excellent option for any student with an interest in learning about modern classical music. It’s more specific in content focus than MUS 205, so not appropriate for the student just looking for a GEP Visual/Performing Arts credit, but definitely suitable for a first-year or transfer student with some interest in music. It also counts as both a GEP Visual/Performing Arts and a Global Knowledge.
MUS 120 Introduction to Music Theory (class no. 3759) While already a 100-level course, it is worth clarifying that this is a basic introduction and suitable for any student interested in learning basic music notation. Counts as GEP Visual/Performing Arts.
And of course encouraging students with musical interest and skill to enroll in an ensemble is always a good choice. Data shows that freshman students who enroll in ensembles become more engaged with their school, retain better, and have higher GPAs than the general population (not to mention the importance of finding a balance of activities in life). The following options do not require an audition:
MUS 116 African American Choral Ensemble (Class No. 11205). Non-auditioned choir, open to all who register that explores a large variety of vocal music from the African diaspora including spirituals, gospel, folk-idioms, and classical works. 1 credit hour
MUS 135 Symphonic Band (Class No. 11177) A non-auditioned band for students who have played their instrument at least one year. This large ensemble combines both experienced and beginner players and is a great place for students who want to get back to playing their band instrument. 1 credit hour
MUS 107 Class Piano I (Class Nos. 5358 & 3757) A one credit group piano class for students who have always wanted to learn how to play piano. No prior experience is required.
MUS 110 Vocal Techniques (Class No. 10041) A one credit group voice class for students who want to learn improve their singing. This course covers a variety of musical styles and requires no prior experience.
