The TRIO Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program at NC State provides an enriching educational experience for first-generation/low-income students or underrepresented students, to excel as undergraduates, succeed in graduate school and ultimately enter faculty positions in our nation’s colleges and universities.

The TRIO Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program provides participants with an experience designed to:

  • Encourage students from groups often underrepresented in graduate programs to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees
  • Promote outstanding, specific activities, resources and support to encourage students to pursue graduate studies
  • Develop skills critical to succeed at the graduate level including definition of goals, undergraduate research opportunities, and student/faculty mentor relationships.

The TRIO Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program at NC State serves 25 undergraduate students annually.

Individual program services and activities are provided at no cost to the participants by the McNair Scholars Program and include:

  • Individualized academic and personal support from McNair Scholars Program Staff
  • Experience conducting research
  • A paid summer research experience or internship
  • Faculty, graduate student, and peer mentoring
  • GRE preparation
  • Opportunities to participate in research conferences and visit graduate schools
  • Assistance in identifying and applying to graduate schools
  • Workshops on the graduate school application process, financial aid, scholarships and fellowships
Competitive applicants must:

  • Have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA*
  • Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at NC State
  • Have a minimum 30 credit hours completed (by the end of the Spring 2019 term) or more with at least four semesters left before graduation
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Have a desire to attain a Ph.D. or Ed.D. Please note that an MD or other professional degrees (JD, MBA, PharmD, etc.) are not eligible for the program

*Students with a GPA below a 3.0 may apply for the program but should explain how they will increase their GPA to be competitive for graduate admissions.
