MEA 493/591: Special Topics – Ecological and Geological Processes in an immersive scientific diving experience

Spring Semester/Spring Short Term 2026

Each Monday from 5:15–7:00 pm in 2118 Jordan Hall, and some Saturdays, and in Bonaire from May 11–25, 2026

Learning outcomes
By the end of the course students will be able to:
1) Describe and explain the unique geologic, marine, and political setting of Bonaire.
2) Highlight the main human-induced threats to marine and terrestrial environments on Bonaire.
3) Explain the various scientific methods used to study the marine and geologic settings on Bonaire.
4) Describe the measures taken by Bonaire to protect and develop the region sustainably.
5) Compare the effectiveness of establishing the Washington Slagbaai National Park with a similar national
park in North America.

GEP Global Knowledge Objectives
1) Describe the history of human development in Bonaire.
2) Explain why the Washington Slagbaai National Park was established.
3) Explain the importance of the Washington Slagbaai National Park in the sustainable development of the
island.
4) Discuss the unique cultural and economic challenges to the conservation of Bonaire.
