MEAS Undergraduate Updates

The Center for Geospatial Analytics at NC State is excited to announce the launch of a new, interdisciplinary undergraduate research program for the 2025-26 academic year: the I-GROUP (Interdisciplinary Geospatial Research Opportunities Undergraduate Program) Internship.

I-GROUP is designed to introduce students to collaborative, cross-disciplinary research in the geospatial sciences. We are now accepting applications for up to 10 research positions for students from any major who want to explore how GIS, remote sensing, and data visualization can solve real-world problems.

What makes I-GROUP unique?

  • Interdisciplinary by design: Students will explore geospatial questions through the lenses of environmental science, computer science, social science, data visualization, design, and more.
  • Tiered mentoring model: Interns will be embedded in research labs and supported by a team that includes faculty, researchers, and graduate students, building strong mentoring relationships and a sense of community.
  • Professional growth: Monthly workshops will support students in developing research skills, expanding their networks, and applying to graduate school.

Program Details:

  • $15/hour plus a $1,000 stipend ($500/semester)
  • 8-10 hours/week for the full academic year (two semesters)
  • Hands-on experience with faculty, researchers and graduate students in research labs across the Center
  • Monthly opportunities for cohort-building and professional development
  • Open to undergraduates from any major – some GIS and programming experience preferred

Applications are open now and will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
