OUR Events and Reminders

  • (new) Symposium season is here! Submit to present at the Spring Symposium (April 23 & 24). We welcome undergraduate research from all disciplines! Submissions and mentor approval are due on March 25, 2024 by 11:59pm. We will not be able to accept late submissions. Review the link for more information about presentations, Symposium, and other details.
  • (new) Seminar highlight: Join us on March 5 to learn more about personal statements. Whether you’re ready to write now or expecting to write one later, learn some dos and don’ts. Personal Statement Seminar.
  • Do you have a research mentor whom you would like to recognize for their guidance, support, advice, etc.? If you’re a volunteer, research assistant, funding awardee, or any other type of undergraduate research mentee working with a faculty/staff mentor, submit a nomination for the Michael Dickey Outstanding Research Mentor Award by March 1 – Mentor Award Nomination form.
  • The OUR, with the University Libraries, will host the Spring Research Slam on March 7 from 4:30-6:00pm in the Fishbowl Forum at DH Hill Jr Library. Selected undergraduate researchers will have five slides and five minutes to discuss their research projects. All are welcome to join!
  • Summer 2024 OUR Research Assistant Program applications will be open from April 1-April 8. Students must have a mentor to apply. OUR RAs are expected to work 10 hours per week throughout the summer (mid-May – end of July).
  • Summer 2024 and Fall 2024 Project Supply Grants are now open! Students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Summer grant submissions are due by March 20; Fall grant submissions are due by June 28.
    • Students MUST attend a proposal help session to have their proposal read. If you have not attended one between January 2023-now, you need to do so.
    • Participant pay is now allowed as part of projects/supplies! Attend a help session or reach out to Dr. Showalter (if you’ve already attended one) for more information about participant pay allowances. Remember, IRBs need to be completed (or in the last review round) before a project can be awarded.
  • Review and sign up for OUR Spring 2024 Seminars. View all relevant information, sign up to attend, and save it on your calendar. Seminars are open to all.
  • Review the 2024 NC State Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs). The list is subject to updates (check back!). Find non-NC State REUs on the NSF REU Database and Pathways to Science Database.
  • The 2024 Envisioning Research Contest is open. Undergraduate researchers, as well as graduates, staff, and faculty are invited to submit images, gifs, and/or videos related to your research. Envisioning Research submissions are due by June 17. Monetary prizes are available for winners.
  • If you’re a student applying to programs/jobs, do not write down the OUR as your supervisor for work history. Make sure to include your mentor and your mentor’s contact information; they will be able to speak to your abilities.
Program/Opportunity Applications
  • (new) Apply to be a Summer camp counselor for day/residential Engineering camps at NC State. Build leadership and outreach skills, among others.
  • The Army Educational Outreach Program has STEM Summer internship opportunities available for undergraduate students. Apply by February 29, 2024.
  • Texas A&M University invites applications for the Summer Undergraduate Research in Genetics and Genomics (SURGe) program. Applications are due by March 1, 2024 (deadline extended).
  • Students – consider Research Pack Abroad as an option for an international agricultural research experience. Japan, Spain, and Ecuador research opportunities are available. Reach out to Dr. Tucker (contact on site) with questions or to apply.
  • Apply for a Rural Works! Internship or SECU Public Fellows Internship! Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through March. Any summer work opportunity with a nonprofit or government organization in North Carolina can be funded through the SECU Program. Undergraduate students of all majors can participate!
  • Arcadia Abroad provides research abroad opportunities. View current 2024 research abroad projects and read more on the Arcadia Abroad STEM site. Applications sent in by 1/15 will receive decisions by 2/1, sent 2/15 by 3/1, and sent 3/15 by 3/31. Check out Intern Philly as well for business, humanities, law, art, and more opportunities.
  • The REU, Advancing High-Performance Computing Opportunities in Undergraduate Research at UW-Eau Claire to Meet Challenges of Multidisciplinary Computational Science, is accepting applications through March 1.
  • Gallaudet University seeks applications from students for the Accessible and Inclusive Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (AIBIDS) summer research program. Applications are due by April 1, 2024.
Opportunities to Present or Listen
  • (new) The University Libraries offer research-related Workshops. Review topics and take advantage of this support! Learn more about other events and workshops on Libraries’ upcoming events page.
  • The Graduate School and the Graduate Student Association extend an invitation to the 17th Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium on April 3, 2024 from 1:30-4:00. Undergraduate students – this is a wonderful opportunity to talk with graduate students about research, gain ideas for presenting your work at Spring Symposium, or learn more about graduate-level work.
  • The Black Doctoral Network invites submissions for the Research Poster Session at the BDN Western Regional Conference to be held on Saturday, April 20, 2024 in Los Angeles, CA at Loyola Marymount University. Deadline: March 1, 2024.
