Program Description:
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) component of the U.S. National Ice Center (USNIC) resides within the Ocean Prediction Center (OPC), a service center in the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), part of the National Weather Service (NWS), a line office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), under the Department of Commerce (DOC). The OPC provides weather data, forecasts, outlooks, and warnings for the protection of life and property; enhancement of the national economy; and the safety of life at sea. The OPC provides marine weather forecasts and warnings of hazardous weather over much of the northern Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. OPC’s team of meteorologists and physical scientists collectively apply their years of cumulative specialized experience in the maritime environment to provide the world’s best marine forecasts and critical decision support services for mariners, utilizing a suite of satellite and in situ observations along with weather and ocean models.
 
Job Responsibilities:
-Operate computers in a Linux environment
-Operate computers in a Windows environment
-Familiarity with ESRI software including ArcMap and/or ArcPro
-Familiarity working with and manipulating GIS data in various formats
-Familiarity with meteorological/oceanographic trends and climatology
-Ability to analyze various satellite and in-situ observations
-Ability to work well with others and alone
-Willingness to participate in and/or contribute to scientific presentations
 
Job Qualifications:
-NOAA Clearance (public trust – can be obtained after hire)
-BA/BS required
-Extensive experience working with Meteorology/Climatology/Oceanography
-Satellite tasking and planning
-Project Management experience
-Knowledge in Remote sensing – visible, Radar, microwave, Synthetic aperture radar
-Great email and communication skills and etiquette
-Quick learner for Ice climatology for Satellite planning.
-Experience with python programming
-Basic ArcGIS usage for visualizing imagery – quick learner for tools
-Visual basic programming experience
Experience working with Excel.
