Dr. Ayse Ercumen in the College of Natural Resources is offering “Water Quality and Health” and “Research Methods for Global Environmental Health”. Currently, both courses are listed as ES 495: Special Topics, but the Water Quality course may switch to ES 425 during enrollment. Please share with any student that’s interested in water quality, public health, environmental policy, toxins, and analytical skills.

ES 495/595 (soon to be ES 425/525) Water Quality and Health: The water we drink is intricately linked to our wellbeing. This course provides an introduction to contaminants in drinking water supplies and disparities in safe water access, globally and nationally. We will review how contaminants enter water systems, their effects on health and methods for their detection and removal.  We will cover local, domestic and international cases, such as PFAS in North Carolina waters, the water lead crisis in 2014 in Flint, and the 2010 cholera epidemic in Haiti.

This is a broad introductory course with no prerequisites other than junior standing.

ES 495 / CE 497 / CE 596 Research Methods for Global Environmental Health: Environmental stressors are a major determinant of our health. This course covers methods to design studies to understand effects of environmental contamination on human health.  We will cover analytical approaches to measure exposures to environmental contaminants, survey-based and observational methods to capture behavioral risks, and epidemiologic study designs to assess health risks.

This is an introductory-level course on research methods with no prerequisites other than junior standing.
