Seminar title – Freshwater Algal blooms in Coastal North Carolina: Reason to worry?
Abstract – Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are increasing in intensity, magnitude and toxicity in several regions across the US and beyond. In North Carolina relatively little is known about the HAB dynamics along the freshwater-marine continuum, on whether increasing reports of blooms throughout the Pamlico-Albemarle Sound System are linked to toxicity and whether current and future toxin production pose a threat to animal and human health. We discuss our findings from HAB research efforts across NC aquatic systems, and report on how toxin dynamics relate to safe recreation, drinking water and consumption of fish and shellfish.
