The WRAL Severe Weather Center has a paid internship available for the summer of 2023. This person will have the opportunity to work with the most experienced staff of broadcast meteorologists in the state of North Carolina.

The internship will feature hands-on experience in all aspects of television and radio weather production, including:

  • Weather forecasting — on deadline —for a large and geographically diverse area
  • Advanced data-gathering and meteorological analysis techniques
  • Creating informational and viewer-friendly weather graphics
  • Coordinating with newscast and promotions producers regarding weather content
  • Working with a live radar system, including the state’s first dual-polarimetric radar.
  • Interpreting data and communicating during extreme weather situations.
  • Developing and updating content for station websites and mobile platforms.
  • Engaging audiences through social media, such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
  • Broadcasting techniques on television (chromakey and in the field) and radio.

While the focus will be on experience specific to the Weather Center, all interns will be exposed to other aspects of TV news production, including news and promotions production, reporting, photojournalism, editing, and broadcast production.  This includes the opportunity to shadow staff in the field.

Prospective interns should be prepared to commit to 20 hours per week of active participation throughout the course of a term, primarily during the late afternoon or early evening time frame.  As WRAL News is a 24/7 operation, interns should also expect some of those hours to be early mornings, late nights, and/or weekends.

Prospective interns should be college juniors or seniors, enrolled in at least a half-time basis at a college or university in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences.  Their participation should be undertaken for academic credit and under the supervision of their academic adviser.
