Geology and Paleoanthropology Summer Field
School at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania
This 6-week course takes place at the world’s
most famous archaeological site, Olduvai Gorge.

During this intensive field camp you will:

  • learn about the fundamentals of geological and evolutionary processes
  • develop skills in fossil hunting, stratigraphy, mapping, archaeological excavations, experimental studies and analytical methods
  • develop an understanding of the relationship between Earth dynamics and human evolution
  • excursion to Ol Doinyo Lengai (an active volcano), Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti ecosystem, and the 3.6 million-year-old Laetoli hominin footprint site
  • visit a local Maasai community

Eligibility:

Students with a 3.0 GPA or higher will be eligible to participate and are required to have taken at least one introductory course in geology, anthropology, archaeology and related fields in paleoanthropology such as evolution, ecology etc. IU and non-IU students are encouraged to apply.
