The American Meteorological Society (AMS) administers an array of graduate fellowships and undergraduate scholarships with the support of its members, corporations, and government agencies nationwide. The fellowships and scholarships range from $1,000 to $25,000 and help further the education of outstanding graduate and undergraduate students pursuing a career in the atmospheric and related oceanic or hydrologic sciences.
- The Father James B. Macelwane Annual Award in Meteorology
- The Father James B. Macelwane Annual Award was established by the American Meteorological Society to honor the late Rev. James B. Macelwane, S.J., a world renowned authority of seismology, who was a geophysicist and Dean of the Institute of Technology, Saint Louis University, until his death in 1956. The recipient of the Father James B. Macelwane award will receive a stipend of $1000 supported by member donations to the AMS Annual Program.
The evaluation of papers occurs during the summer. Announcement of the award recipient will be made August of 2023.
- AMS Graduate Fellowships
- Applications are due on 1 January 2023
- Stipends will be presented to each fellowship recipient for a nine-month period in the 2023/2024 academic year. In addition, fellowship recipients will receive partial travel support to attend the AMS Annual Meeting.
Notifications will go out in March 2023.
- AMS Freshman Undergraduate Scholarship
- Applications are due on 3 February 2023
- The American Meteorological Society is pleased to announce the AMS Freshman Undergraduate Scholarship program, open to all high school students and designed to encourage study in the atmospheric and related sciences. Serving as a unique example of various sectors of our field joining together to support young, talented minds, the scholarships are being sponsored by partners in industry, as well as through named scholarships either established by an AMS member or in memory of someone.
Notifications will go out in May 2023.
- AMS Scholarship for Underserved Communities (formerly Minority Scholarship)
- Applications are due on 24 February 2023
- The AMS Scholarship for Underserved Communities will award funding to minority students who have been traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, especially Hispanic, Native American, and Black/African American students. Funding for the scholarships is provided through donations made to the AMS Annual Program. - AMS Senior Named Scholarships
- Applications are due on 10 March 2023
- American Meteorological Society (AMS) members sponsor scholarships each year to support the education of outstanding undergraduate students entering their final year of study. 21 Senior Scholarship awards ranging from $2000 to $10,000 are available for the 2023 year.
Notifications will go out between May and June 2023.
- Women in Science Scholarship
- Applications are due on 17 March 2023
- The Women in Science Scholarship supports women in the atmospheric, oceanic, and climate sciences, and related areas of study. The scholarship was established to acknowledge that gender diversity is essential in the pursuit of better science. An all-woman committee reviews and selects the recipient of this award. The scholarship carries a $10,000 stipend.

- Applications are due on 12 May 2023
- The American Meteorological Society (AMS) is pleased to invite applications for the AMS Graduate Fellowship in the History of Science, to be awarded to a student in the process of completing a dissertation on the history of the atmospheric, or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences. The Fellowship carries a $20,000 stipend and will support one year of dissertation research.
