Job Duties: Assist Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) biologists and technicians in the collection and processing of biological data for ongoing fisheries research projects in the field, at fishing tournaments, and in the Age Laboratory.

Major Task to be Performed: Work with DMF staff to remove otoliths, scales, and fin clips from finfish, and learn about aging procedures while assisting with ongoing Division independent and dependent sampling programs. As well as, collecting data and biological samples at fishing tournaments and assisting with public outreach at tournaments and other events.

Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: Experience a broad range of fisheries sampling and research techniques used to collect and age structures. The data collected through this internship will contribute to the stock assessments that serve as the basis for many of the fisheries management decisions made by the Division of Marine Fisheries.

Academic Majors Desired: Marine Biology; Biology; Wildlife Ecology; Environmental Science; Fisheries Science; Fisheries Management; Conservation Biology.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies: Knowledge or seeking knowledge of fisheries research and management. Experience in field and laboratory settings; collecting and processing data; interacting with members of the public; using Microsoft Office products.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college, university, law school, community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state.
  • Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Applicant must be at least 18 years old by January 1, 2023.
  • Community college students must have completed their first year completed before beginning the internship.
  • Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program.
  • To qualify for a law internship, applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship, unless other majors are listed.
  • Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship. Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment.
