(Looking for PCOM business majors and civil engineers)
(Chuck Flink caflink@ncsu.edu)
UrbanPlan is an engaging theoretical case study for both students and professors. At NC State University, the goal of this seminar will be to emphasize real estate development practices. Students will consider real estate development and community engagement from different viewpoint. Students must balance sustainable design development, financial, and social considerations. The experience of UrbanPlan will enrich academics, provide students with industry professionals, and demonstrate that students can have a balanced voice in shaping the future of their communities.
LAR 607 Natural Hazards, Disasters and Climate Change Adaptation Lecture Series
T 6:00-8:45 PM
(Gavin Smith gsmith5@ncsu.edu)
Practitioners and Scholars will discuss a range of pertinent topics which include the link between the state of our natural environment and the effects of natural hazards and disasters on human settlement; management of how nations, cities, communities, and organizations prepare for, respond to, mitigate against, and recover from extreme events; Speakers are drawn from varied fields including architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, photography, and geospatial analytics.
LAR 554 Disaster Resilient Policy, Engineering and Design TH 6:00-8:45 PM
(Gavin Smith gsmith5@ncsu.edu)
This course will address the interdisciplinary (policy, engineering, and design) study and practice of disaster resilience. We will critically review existing policies, programs and approaches taken that have led to increased levels of exposure to natural hazards, growing levels of social vulnerability, and exponentially rising disaster losses. This course will include lectures, interactive exercises, and interdisciplinary term-based projects to advance disaster resilience.
LAR 543 Landscape Performance and Metrics, W 9:35-12:20
(Emily McCoy ermccoy@ncsu.edu)
This course will introduce the concepts of landscape performance; including environmental, economic/life cycle cost, management, social, and aesthetic considerations; The tools and methods to assess landscape performance; How to conduct a landscape assessment; How to integrate these concepts in the design process, from concept design to landscape management. This course will emphasize practical application including setting performance goals with clients to meet their needs within regulatory frameworks. This course will include field investigations of built work and collaborative production of a landscape performance assessment.
