MEAS Undergraduate Updates
There will be no seminar this Monday due to the Labor Day holiday.
Our next seminar will be Monday, September 12, at 3:30 PM in 1216 Jordan Addition.

Speaker – Xiaoming Liu, Associate Professor and Colin McMillan Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (hosted by A. Curry)

Seminar Title – Geochemical Adventures at the Earth’s Surface

Bio – Dr. Xiaoming Liu is an Associate Professor and Colin McMillan Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before joining the faculty at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in 2015, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Carnegie Institution for Science. She holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc. from the University of Maryland, and joint B.S. degrees from the University of Waterloo, Canada, and the China University of Geosciences (Beijing). Dr. Liu has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers in EPSL, GCA, Nature Geoscience, Nature Communications, PNAS, Science Advances, etc. She is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award in 2019. She has won the 2021 Early Career Geological Award by the Geological Society of America (GSA), Mineralogy, Geochemistry, Volcanology & Petrology Division.

Abstract – Liu is a geochemist who studies the composition, structure, processes, evolution and other aspects of the Earth. In this seminar, Xiaoming will take you on a geochemical adventure focusing on what her group has done over the past five years at UNC on Earth’s surface. Liu’s research group at UNC Chapel Hill focuses on understanding fundamental questions related to the origin and evolution of Earth, including:

1) Chemical weathering and its influence on the global carbon/silicon cycle and crustal evolution;
2) Evolution of Earth’s surface environments;
3) Geochemistry of fluid-rock interactions;
4) Environmental Geochemistry.
