Marine Science and Conservation Fall Scholarships
Fall 2022: August 29- December 19, 2022

Deadline: April 15

Each year the Duke University Marine Laboratory offers full scholarships for the fall semester to two undergraduates or recent baccalaureates outside of Duke University. These scholarships cover full tuition & fees, room & board, books, and a small stipend. The recipients will enroll in Duke Marine Lab courses of their choosing taught in Beaufort, where there is emphasis on the biology and physiology of marine organisms, marine molecular biology, marine policy, and coastal socio-ecological issues. Awards will be made no later than July 1, 2022. Students on financial aid should consult with their financial aid advisor to determine how a scholarship would impact their financial aid package.

To be eligible, an applicant must

  • Be a sophomore, junior, senior enrolled in an undergraduate college or university (not from Duke) or a recent baccalaureate
  • Be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa

Other factors considered in the evaluation process include whether an applicant:

  • identifies with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in marine science
  • has demonstrated interest in marine science and its impact on society
  • anticipates pursuing an advanced degree in the marine sciences
  • submits a compelling personal statement and strong letters of recommendation

To apply

  • Interested students are asked to submit:
  • Brief personal essay: How has your heritage made a difference in your life? How might it resonate in your work in marine science? How will a semester at the Duke Marine Laboratory benefit your career goals? (one page or less)
  • Resume
  • Two letters of recommendation (electronic recommendations are accepted)
