What:
Job Opening – Meteorologist – operational forecasting in the marine environment, full time permanent position. Marine Weather Center is growing and we need a 4th Meteorologist.
Where:
Marine Weather Center is headquartered in Lakeland, Florida, but (after training) working
remotely is fine. We started telecommuting before the pandemic, and it works well for us.
But working from our office in Lakeland is fine too.
Ideal candidate will have:
– Bachelor’s Degree in Meteorology, or equivalent experience/knowledge

  • Experience forecasting weather (preferably in marine environment), along with desire and aptitude to learn more about forecasting weather in marine environment.
  • Ability to “see in your mind / paint a mental picture of” complex 4-dimensional phenomena (3-D weather unfolding over the 4th dimension of time), and understand effects on a small boat
  • Extensive knowledge of observational weather data and computer forecast model resources
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, especially the ability to distill complex information into a simple yet detailed forecast which provides client the information they need to make good decisions
    The ideal candidate will also possess:
    – Boating experience, on sail and power boats. Familiarity with boating (or long-term cruising) in Bahamas, Caribbean, offshore Atlantic waters, other geographies a plus
    – Experience racing sailboats, or familiarity with racing strategy and tactics
    – Familiarity with Social Media platforms
    Job Description:
    Marine Weather Center provides high-value-added weather forecasts and routing advice primarily to small private sail and power boats. We disseminate forecasts via SSB voice radio, email, voice telephone, fax, text message, internet webcast, recorded forecasts, and social media.
    Duties include:
    – Analyze recent observational data and computer forecast models to arrive at a forecast, and collaborate with other forecasters to coordinate forecasts
    – Conduct SSB Voice Nets (and simultaneous webcasts) at various times including 6am-10am Eastern time, and late afternoons/evenings, as many as 7 days/week. Record webcasts then post recordings to website
    – Compose Email forecasts for each of 4 Regions (US Coast and W Atlantic, Bahamas, E Caribbean, W Caribbean), and in Tropical season detailed Tropical analysis/forecasts for entire Atlantic Basin
    – Provide forecasts by phone when clients call
    – Compose custom email forecasts, worldwide
    – Respond to inquiries from current and prospective clients by email and website support ticket
    – Some travel may be required, including possibly boat shows and seminars
    Scheduling:
    You must be able to work anytime of the day/night, but we are generally open for business from 6am-8pm. Most scheduled tasks occur in the early mornings (SSB Nets/Webcasts/Recordings 6am-10am, Regional Email forecasts 6am-3pm), with some work during the day (available for phone calls 10am-2pm), and occasional work in the late afternoons (another SSB Net/Webcast).
    Work days and tasks rotate (we will not ask you to work every weekend or holiday). Normal work weeks are 30-40 hours over 4 or 5 days, with some full days and some half-days.
    Overtime is customary during busy times and when one of us is sick, on vacation, or traveling on business.
    Salary:

Starting salary $21/hr. Future increases depend on your job performance and growth and profitability of the business

Marine Weather Center will provide you with proprietary tools, training, expertise, client information, and valuable company secrets. You will be required to sign a non-compete agreement, barring you from providing weather forecasting or routing advice to marine interests (persons and/or boats) for 2 years after you leave our employment.
Tools:
If you do not currently own sufficient tools (computers, etc.), Marine Weather Center will provide them. You must be able to work from home, at least occasionally, and provide your own reliable home Internet connection.
