The Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA) is proud to host the Environmental Challenge International (ECi) as part of its 2021 Virtual Annual Conference & Exhibition.

What is ECi?

The Environmental Challenge International (ECi) Competition gives student teams experience with proposing effective solutions to a simulated environmental problem — a problem based on real-world site conditions and events. The teams will present their solution to a panel of environmental professionals at the Virtual Annual Conference in June.

The Challenge: Resource Planning for 2030 and Beyond

This year’s challenge will focus on developing a resource plan for a Florida company’s recently acquired utility assets that supports the path to reduce GHG emissions and achieve zero carbon. Your team will need to research the environmental regulations, policies and technologies related to coal, gas and renewable energy generation and convince the company’s Board of Investors to modernize the assets through 2050. The resource plan must balance reliability, affordability, safety and resilience while considering the social and environmental impacts of facility operations.

Why should you get involved?

ECi gives students the opportunity to put their knowledge to work. Team members will gain valuable experience working in a group, interacting with professionals, and solving problems. Plus, it looks good on a resume, and there’s the potential to earn cash prizes!

Who can participate?

The ECi Competition is open to undergraduate students, graduate students, Ph.D. candidates, and recent graduates (2020) in the environmental field. Teams should consist of 3 to 5 members.

Think you have what it takes? Prove it.

Proposals are due May 28, 2021. All team members must register for the Virtual ACE Conference. Details on how to participate (including this year’s Problem and Protocol) can be found on the ECi Competition page.
