The Collections Manager of Paleontology and Geology provides technical and collections management expertise for the activities of the Paleontology and Geology Units. Their priorities are the accessioning, cataloging, housing, conservation, and digitization of geological and paleontological specimens, effective management of databases and metadata related to these specimens, public and professional community engagement (e.g., management of specimen loans and oversight of visiting researchers in the collections, engagement with regional stakeholders such as amateur collectors), and involvement in the broader natural history collections community to maintain awareness of best practices in this field. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Executing and managing activities concerning the paleontology and geology collections in accordance with NCMNS policies and various State and Federal permits and regulations
- Maintaining the collections: data incorporation and upkeep (accessioning/cataloging, computerized data entry, digitization, database management, and associated tasks); specimen identification, labeling, and housing; and specimen conservation and threat mitigation
- Assisting the Geology and Paleontology Curators in evaluating the appropriateness of loan, imaging, and sampling requests, and ensuring efficient processing and safe transport/handling of specimen loans in accordance with current shipping and permit regulations
- Monitoring general collections use and providing oversight of visiting researchers
- Building good working relationships with members of the scientific and amateur communities to promote public collections in paleontology and geology
- Keeping up to date on evolving best practices and techniques regarding collections and archives
- Procuring and maintaining necessary materials and supplies (by obtaining product specifications and quotes, and working with other curators to submit appropriate purchase requests) and establishing and following safety guidelines
- Supervising and providing training for technicians (temporary or permanent), interns, and volunteers working in the paleontology and geology collections
- Maintain a good working knowledge of the taxonomy and organization of collections materials (including IMA mineral, IUGS rock, ICZN animal, and ICBN plant nomenclature), of curatorial best practices associated with specimen preparation, preservation, and housing, of data storage and management, and of the scientific and other communities that use this information and collections-associated materials
- Assisting with the preparation of relevant grant proposals submitted by the Units
- Conducting public programs such as tours of the collections for classes or other groups; seminars and lectures; field trips; programs for clubs and civic organizations and other sections of the NCMNS
- Collaborate with other Units or extra-institutional groups to deliver specific paleontology and geology-related public programs to targeted audiences
- Providing technical information on and monitor the safe handling and record keeping of paleontological and geological specimens for other Units in the museum
- Providing information and assistance to the public relevant to paleontology and geology. The Collection Manager will respond to public requests in a timely and accurate manner via text-based (e-mail or print) or telephone correspondence
- Other duties as assigned
- Evening and weekend work will occasionally be required for lectures and field trips
