Summer 2021 Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program at the Naval Research Laboratory Marine Meteorology Division

Each year the U.S. Navy offers summer internships through the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) (https://nreip.asee.org/). This 10 week paid internship provides opportunities for undergraduates (who currently have 31 or more college credits and are enrolled at a 4 year U.S. college or university) and graduate students to participate in research, under the guidance of an appropriate mentor, at a participating Navy laboratory. The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is one of the many U.S. Navy laboratories and institutions participating in NREIP. The bulk of NRL’s scientific divisions are headquartered in Washington, D.C., but there are several satellite offices focused on specific subject matter. The NRL Marine Meteorology Division (MMD) (https://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/) is located in Monterey, CA where over 60 scientists work on a broad array of atmospheric science topics including global and mesoscale numerical model development, data assimilation, probabilistic prediction, aerosols, radiation, remote sensing and meteorological applications for the U.S. Navy.

We encourage the top students from our nation’s best meteorology and atmospheric science programs to apply for an NREIP internship at NRL MMD. Students with backgrounds in computer science, data mining, and machine learning and an interest in how these areas intersect with meteorological applications are also strongly encouraged to apply. To increase the likelihood of receiving an internship offer in a specific area of research, students are encouraged to carefully review the list of eligible laboratories and identify those that have matching research interests, and then indicate their preferred laboratory/ies on their application where appropriate. Please note that NRL MMD is one of the principal Navy laboratories for research in meteorology and atmospheric science.

Please visit the website (https://nreip.asee.org/) for more detailed information about NREIP and how to apply. NRL MMD is listed in the NREIP application as “Naval Research Laboratory (Monterey, CA).

Due to the ongoing pandemic of COVID-19, we cannot guarantee that the summer 2021 program will take place in-person. However, the summer 2020 program hosted 15 students virtually and was a great success with students regularly meeting with advisors through video teleconferencing. We are currently planning next summer as an in-person program, but students should be aware that the program may be shifted to a virtual program at any time between now and summer 2021.

Below is a list of some research topics available at NRL MMD in summer 2021. If you are interested in one of these topics, please refer to it in your application. However, NRL MMD scientists work on many more topics and we encourage all well-qualified applicants to apply, including those with backgrounds in computer science, data mining, and machine learning.

  • Predictability of the Arctic Oscillation
  • Remote Sensing, Aerosols, and Fire Weather
  • Data Assimilation
  • Tropical Cyclone Intensity Change
  • Field Campaign Measurements and Meteorology Data Visualization
  • Observation Quality Control
  • Satellite Aerosol Observations
  • Aerosols and Cloud Physical Processes
  • Surface Layer Physics in Coastal Zones

NRL MMD strives to develop and maintain a diverse workforce. NRL MMD is committed to providing equal opportunity for all employees and applicants for employment and does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, neurodiversity, physical appearance, veteran status, religious beliefs, political beliefs, country of origin, working style, job category, education level, cultural background, and marital and parental status.
