Join us for a talk by Iain Stewart, popular BBC documentary presenter and professor of geoscience communication and director of the Sustainable Earth Institute at the University of Plymouth. Stewart’s talk is titled, “Selling Planet Earth: Communicating Geo-Environmental Science Through Popular Television.”
This event, hosted by NC State’s Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences, is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
About the Speaker
Iain Stewart is a professor of Geoscience Communication at the University of Plymouth and Director of its Sustainable Earth Institute. With a Ph.D. in earthquake geology in the Mediterranean region, Stewart’s long-standing research interests are in geological hazards, geo-energy, sustainable geoscience and earth science communication. His communication expertise has been built on a 15-year partnership with BBC Television presenting popular natural history documentary programs, including “Earth: The Power of the Planet,” “Earth: The Climate Wars,” “How Earth Made Us,” “How To Grow A Planet,” “Rise of the Continents” and “Volcano Live.”
Stewart is actively involved in public engagement, not least through his current roles as president of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and of the Devon Wildlife Trust. That public service to geographical and geo-environmental education has been recognized with an MBE and awards from numerous international geoscience organizations. Holding a UNESCO Chair in Geoscience and Society, he leads the UNESCO International Geoscience Programme’s project 685 on Geology for Sustainable Development. He is a member of the advisory board for the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) and Communications Lead for the UK’s new Urban Disaster Risk research hub, Tomorrow’s Cities.
