Job Summary:

The Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO) is looking for multiple GG-1301/1360-7 or 9-FPL11 professionals to serve as Glider Pilots.  Ideal candidates are those who have the desire to learn, are agile and readily adapt to rapidly evolving technology, and can perform a wide range of tasks in an Operational watch floor environment.  Principle duties include using Unix-based computer systems to remotely conduct Command and Control (C2) of unmanned ocean sensing systems, evaluating physical oceanographic data to validate sensor performance, and taking established procedural actions when sensors experience casualties.  Conducts work related tasks in a watch floor environment that involves shift work or call back duty and occasional travel.

 

Under varying levels of guidance, commensurate with pay grade, of senior lead pilots, supports the remote deployment and recovery of Unmanned Underwater and Unmanned Surface Systems (UxV) systems and routine daily operations of UxVs using specialized C2 software.  Performs evaluations of UxV system and physical oceanographic information and adjusts system parameters, as needed, to meet mission objectives.  Identifies system software and hardware deficiencies, writes computer scripts, and implements basic corrections to background processes in consultation with senior lead pilots. Utilizes grade-level proficiency in Unix-based and PC computer systems to identify, report and recommend mitigation of inefficiencies in specialized C2 and data analysis software.

 

Specific Duties:

  • Carries out specific assignments involving the remote deployment and recovery of UxV systems
  • Monitors UxV communications to ensure the system health and reports anomalies to senior lead pilots
  • Makes adjustments to UxV system parameters based on the environment and system health
  • Uses Unix-based computer systems for UxV C2, data processing and analysis
  • Completes on-the-job and formal training to ensure readiness for next career progression grade level

 

Desired Minimum Qualifications/Ranking Factors: Applicants will be evaluated based on the criteria identified below and must demonstrate at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in order to successfully perform the duties of the position:
