MEAS Undergraduate Updates
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures now offers a minor in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (16TEFL). This minor would be of great interest to students who are considering teaching English in local ESL programs or in language schools abroad. There is a huge demand for trained native English or bilingual teachers. Teaching EFL would provide a paid ticket to travel the world.
Three of the five courses are online: FL 436 Perspectives on English a New Language, FL 424 Linguistics for ESL Professionals, and FL 440 Internship. The other two courses, FL 427 Methods and Materials in Teaching ESL and an ENG elective are face-to-face.
This spring students can take FL 424 Linguistics for ESL Professionals (online) and/or one of the two possible English electives: ENG 326 History of the English Language and ENG 327 Language and Gender. ENG 329 Language and Globalization is already full.
This minor complements many major areas of study, especially those in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences: English, Foreign Language, Social Work, International Studies, Communication Studies, Sociology and Anthropology, etc. It would also enhance the application of students interested in applying for a Fulbright in the English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program.
Getting registered for the minor is quick and seamless. Interested students need only to contact me to schedule an appointment: jshaesel@ncsu.edu
