Each year the U.S. Navy offers summer internships through the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) (https://nreip.asee.org/). This paid 10 week internship is designed to provide opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to participate in research, under the guidance of an appropriate mentor, at a participating Navy laboratory. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) sponsors this program, administrated by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and offers summer appointments at a Navy laboratory to current sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students.

The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is one of the many U.S. Navy laboratories and institutions participating in NREIP. NRL operates as the U.S. Navy’s full-spectrum corporate laboratory, conducting a broad-based multidisciplinary program of scientific research and advanced technological development directed toward maritime applications of new and improved materials, techniques, equipment, systems and ocean, atmospheric, and space sciences and related technologies. The bulk of NRL’s scientific divisions are headquartered in Washington, D.C., but there are several satellite offices focused on specific subject matter. The offices in Monterey, CA are home to the NRL Marine Meteorology Division (MMD), where over 60 scientists work on a broad array of atmospheric science topics including global and mesoscale numerical model development, data assimilation, probabilistic prediction, aerosol, radiation, remote sensing and meteorological applications for the U.S. Navy.

We encourage the top students from our nation’s best meteorology and atmospheric science programs to apply for an NREIP internship at NRL MMD. Students with expertise in computer science, data mining, machine learning, and artificial intelligence and an interest in how these areas intersect with meteorological applications are also strongly encouraged to apply. Students may apply to intern at any of the participating U.S. Navy laboratories listed on the NREIP website (https://nreip.asee.org/). To increase the likelihood of receiving an internship offer in a specific area of research, students are encouraged to carefully review the list of eligible laboratories and identify those that have matching research interests, and then indicate their preferred laboratory/ies on their application where appropriate. Please note that NRL MMD is one of the principal Navy laboratories for research in meteorology and atmospheric science. Please visit the website (https://nreip.asee.org/) for more detailed information about NREIP and how to apply. NRL MMD is listed in the NREIP application as “Naval Research Laboratory (Monterey, CA).”
